Rotorua is the most volcanic area of New Zealand. It is a really strange place, you can be walking along the street and there will be sulphur vents at the side of the road. They use the geothermal heat for generating electricity and heating the hot tub at our hostel! But the place smells really really bad because of all the sulphur!
The area is also famous for it's Maori culture and I went to a Maori village and ate some of their traditional food, which is cooked underground on hot rocks. Very tasty! Check out the warriors in the photo below.
The first two photos below are at one of the geothermal sites outside the town, but the last photo shows one of the vents in the park in the city centre. One of the motels had to close recently because a new vent opened up in their garden!
