Rotorua is the most volcanic area of New Zealand. It is a really strange place, you can be walking along the street and there will be sulphur vents at the side of the road. They use the geothermal heat for generating electricity and heating the hot tub at our hostel! But the place smells really really bad because of all the sulphur!

The area is also famous for it's Maori culture and I went to a Maori village and ate some of their traditional food, which is cooked underground on hot rocks. Very tasty! Check out the warriors in the photo below.

The first two photos below are at one of the geothermal sites outside the town, but the last photo shows one of the vents in the park in the city centre. One of the motels had to close recently because a new vent opened up in their garden!

Auckland

So I had two nights in Auckland (New Zealand's largest city) and the highlight of my stay was definately the skyjump from the skytower - the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. The jump was 192m and lasted 11 seconds and was absolutely amazing!! The best part about it was that after the first jump I got another for free because nobody else was waiting to go!

The view from the observation deck was great as well - although I am glad I did the jump before the observation deck. I don't think I would have chosen to jump if I had seen how high it was beforehand!

Also, here is a video of my jump, although you can't really see it's me, I assure you it is! Thanks again Alberto for the video!

I stopped for just one night at Mount Maunganui. I knew nothing about the place when I arrived, but apparently it is a popular holiday spot for Kiwis. It is named after the mountain (obviously!), which I climbed and got an amazing view from the top.

At the base of the mountain, in the second photo, you can see another Beachside Holiday Park!

Napier is a city on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. In 1931 a large earthquake destroyed most of the city and it was then rebuilt in the Art Deco style.

Wellington

There was some amazing scenery on the ferry journey from Picton on the south island, to Wellington on the north island - and it was great weather as well - bonus!

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, but it is much smaller than Auckland and doesn't really feel like a capital city. It is a really cool place though - cities by the water always seem nicer than those inland.

While there I climbed Mt Victoria, and there were some awesome views over the city, check them out in the last picture...
